We tend to be very specific in our criticism of Miss Nicole’s style choices and we tend to limit our unasked-for advice to her to a set of simple guidelines, foremost among them being that she is much, much better at working black looks dramatically than she is at working a whole range of colors. Because of her own coloring, we tend to think her best palette is more limited than most. And while we try very hard to avoid turning our opinions and personal tastes into rules to follow, we’re fairly consistent on the point that icy blondes should almost always stay from yellows, especially if they’re at the rich end of the scale. This is not a preamble to the reveal that we think she nailed this one. It’s a bit more complicated than that.
Actually, scratch that. It’s not complicated at all. It’s this: Nicole Kidman is very, very good at working difficult fashion and we don’t give her enough credit for that. When we put her record up against someone like, say Cate Blanchett, we can’t honestly say she’s had as many red carpet “wins” under her belt. But when we make that comparison we’re struck by how Kidman really does put the effort in on hard-to-work fashion on par with ladies like Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Lupita Nyong’o. We just thought she deserved a shoutout on that, since we’re fairly consistently nitpicky about her details and choices. She’s an A-List red carpet fashionista who happens to have some limitations that she doesn’t pay much attention to from time to time. In other words, we kind of hate this dress, in design, style and color. But she looks way better than she probably should in something so hard to wear and (from a color perspective) ill-suited to her. Props for that.
