The Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment In Entertainment Event 2019 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on May 01, 2019

Kittens, let’s just the style efforts of some very empowered entertainers!

Alicia Keys in Marc Jacobs

It seems a bit heavy for this time of year if not a bit grandiose for this kind of party. Plus there’s the whole turtleneck issue, which does not incline us to shower love all of this look. And yet, it pretty much works for her. It’s bold and it has an interesting shape that she doesn’t appear to have any problems working.

Kumail Nanjiani

We want so very much to hate this – because again: turtlenecks, which are Satan’s Garment – but the color and style look fantastic on him. He’s newly swole and perhaps it’s affecting the fit on the suit, which is just this side of being snug on him. Love the boots but you’ve got to be extra careful when you wear them with dress pants. Check that the hem is sitting normally when you get out of the limo, Kumail.

Laura Harrier in AlexaChung

It’s basic and we’ve seen it a million times in the last couple of years, but we can’t claim she’s not working this HillarySuit. The headband makes a fun twist on the look.

Lea Michele in Galvan

Also a pretty decent take on what’s become a standard red carpet look for women. It’s just a bit too big on her, though.

Marsai Martin in Jovani

It’s a great look, it a little bit too much on the grownup side of style. The makeup helps keep it fresh but we like it when her style has a bit more youthful exuberance to it. This look could be put on Taraji without any changes, which indicates it needed a little youthening in the style.

Oprah Winfrey

If Miss Oprah wants to get super-matchy in her style, we’re not the fools who would try to tell her otherwise. Oh, wait. Yes we are. This is fine, but the glasses coordinating with the dress and the belt and shoes coordinating with the jewelry – that’s all a bit too much coordination for us. We’d rather the glasses didn’t match and there was at least one piece of jewelry that actively worked against all that gold. Gorgeous shoes, though.

Selena Gomez in Celine

It’s fine, but not great. We get that perhaps this was seen as a professional event and folks tried to dress accordingly. We don’t think high glamour was the way to go. But this is one mumsy-as-hell look, from the busty dress style to the businesslike pumps. At the very least slap on a belt and a little color.
