The fun folks at Netflix just dropped a bunch of info on the fifth series of the award-winning science fiction anthology show Black Mirror. Do we have thoughts? Oh, honey.
You know, we were sitting with our bitch-settings turned to “snide,” all ready to jump in and roll our eyes vociferously at this one. There have been a lot of truly entertaining, thought-provoking and visually stunning moments over the course of Black Mirror’s run, but the bloom came off the rose for us a while back. Bandersnatch was a data-mining operation disguised as entertainment. Season 4 had its moments; especially the award-winning USS Callister, but we found the nihilism of the series and its obsession with technological immortality to be repetitive over time. There are only so many “upload the consciousness” stories you can do before you wind up circling the same themes and outcomes over and over again.
And seeing the cast list of recognizable faces and outright superstars, we were all ready to compose a devastatingly witty twist on “jumping the shark,” perhaps having to do with a technological shark that has uploaded its consciousness or something.
But dammit, this all looks kind of great. Black Mirror was always a visually interesting show, but they really appear to have ramped up the look of things. Maybe that’s not the best criterion for judging an upcoming season, but at the very least, the show’s not looking stale.
“Experience three all-new stories from mastermind Charlie Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones, starring Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.
Black Mirror returns with its much-anticipated fifth season on Wednesday, June 5th, exclusively on Netflix.”
