Kacey Musgraves covers the March 2019 issue of Glamour magazine photographed by Eric Ray Davidson and styled by Deborah Afshani.
As her career took off, she thought it could be fun to infuse her look and sound with the tentpoles of yeehaw. (“The bigger the hair, the higher the yeehaw” is how she describes it. “Rhinestones are in there somewhere, obviously.” She pauses. “And just not giving a fuck.”) Yeehaw has since spread in fashion and pop culture, and now fans bring giant “Yeehaw Queen!” posters to her shows. “It makes me happy, that in some strange way there’s an affinity for something that’s a big part of me,” she says. “I can’t get rid of the country; it’s just in my DNA.”
“When you’re younger and have opportunities knocking at your door, you think, I have to say yes; what if they don’t knock again?” she says. “But that’s just not how it really works. Opportunities will knock as long as you feel like you have enough of yourself to keep giving. That’s been a good part of hitting 30 and getting older—the power of saying no is a beautiful thing, and it can actually bring a lot more yeses into your life.”
