Pop Style Opinionfest: Jussie, Karl and Oscar

Kittens, we tumbled out of bed, stumbled to the kitchen, poured ourselves a cup of ambition and then flipped on our mics and SPEWED. It is, of course, Oscars weekend, which is also the launch of T Lo’s busiest 10-day stretch for the entire calendar year. We go into a little bit of the upcoming ceremony and how much of a shitshow it already is, plus we have a few things about how politicized the Oscars have become and how that’s both a good development and also one that’s having detrimental effects on the institution over time.

We also manage to sneak in a pretty decent, if rambling, review of what’s wrong with Star Trek: Discovery (as well as what’s right with it) and Lorenzo has a new Netflix find that had him laughing so hard, he literally rolled off the couch at one point.

But first, we’ve got to address the big, depressing elephant in the room: Jussie Smollett’s appalling turn of events. We go into why we supported him initially, why we have no regrets for doing so, and just how heartbreaking we find this whole situation. We’re trying to grapple with why – aside from the reasons given – he would do something like this; especially since the blowback will be devastating to him. There are no easy answers here; just feelings and questions.

And finally, we talk about the death of Karl Lagerfeld; what he meant for fashion and what his absence now means for it. He’s a legendary figure whose reach and influence are so extensive that they can’t even be effectively quantified this close to his life. His legacy and work is one for the historians to talk about but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a few things to say ourselves – and they’re not all good. He was a divisive figure representative of a time in fashion that has passed and whose influence is rapidly fading. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly things change now.

So that’s us, then. Shooting our mouths off with lots to say, as per the uzh. Thanks for listening, kittens!
