In retrospect, we’re not sure that we could have accurately predicted Steffi’s style approach to her Oscars poledance. We knew she would tone things down, but we guess we must have assumed she’d return to the kinds of classic looks she wore when she was hanging out with Tony Bennett a lot.
Instead, she’s kept things in the realm of Gaga-interesting while also maintaining a baseline normalcy that doesn’t intimidate the more conservative folks who have a say in which awards she receives. This is lovely, but it also has just a tiny bit of an edge to it. The sleeves (all 6 or so) look way too fussy, but she clearly enjoys working them and it gives the gown the one bit of weirdness she needs. It’s a really striking look.
Her hair still clashes with everything, but we figure she sees the brassy yellow color as one part of her signature look she doesn’t want to give up.
