Royal Tour 2018: Meghan Markle Sticks to the Plan in Dion Lee and Club Monaco

Posted on October 18, 2018

Duchess Megs is never, ever going to make our jobs easy.

And by that we mean Mrs. Sussex is determined not to be too interesting in her style choices. Except for the budding baby bump, this picture could’ve been taken at any number of appearances in the last year. She is the new standard for playing it safe. Her choice, of course. And there are a whole bunch of very good and very obvious reasons why she’d want to downplay her style choices so as not to risk criticism or ridicule.

But we would argue that this approach won’t continue to pay off for her down the line. Cathy spent her entire royal career playing it safe too, but she eventually settled on a look and style that allowed her to play with the elements each time, offering up fresh variations on a theme. Granted, it took Mrs. Cambridge a while to pull her style together. We realize Megs needs time. Her public style changed drastically when she went from actress to royal, which is to be expected and which is why we hold out hope that it will continue to change over time as she gets more comfortable in her role. And in all fairness, Harry’s one of the dullest royals in terms of style. Even his father is more stylish than him.

Having said that, these are both perfectly serviceable looks. We don’t love the navy one, just because it has all that folding and goofiness at the hem. The black one’s pretty sharp, though. Love the row of buttons, which is an element that comes off downright bold on someone who plays things so safe. And of course the flats are adorable and a charming concession to her limits as a newly pregnant Duchess on a whirlwind tour.
