We wanted to love this but truth be told, we never truly got in line with that whole “trench coat as a dress” thing. Even when it’s rendered in a high-end version, a lady still comes off looking like a subway flasher for like she escaped a burning building in the middle of the night.
Our main issue is that it’s so hard to make the style look impeccable. Even if you’re working a more insouciant sort of vibe, it so often comes off sloppy to us. Coats can be tied haphazardly, leaving the hems uneven in the front. A dress doesn’t have that option without coming off like there’s something wrong with it or it was badly styled. Not even Ri, master of the hi-lo with a make-anything-work attitude, can sell this one to us. And we’re not convinced the gold silk is helping the design. This strikes us as another example of the dreaded (by someone, presumably) For Models Only dress.
