Under any circumstances, we’d find this outfit to be a notable choice for Miss Natalie. The Dior part would be no surprise of course, since she has a contract with the house and routinely favors the brand for the red carpet. While we’ve already noted a steadily increasing sense of strength and a more declarative tone evolving in her personal style (a move away from basic ingenue or Serious Actress looks into a bolder, more statement-making mode) over the past few years, this one’s so boldly head-turning that it deserves a moment of consideration.
That is a stunning skirt; one that demands attention. What’s interesting about the look is how everything else, from the bodice design to the sleeves to the footwear represents an unexpected swerve from expectations. If we’re being honest, we don’t like anything about the upper half and think the skirt calls for a more structured shoe than what looks like a flat slide, but that’s because we’re professional nitpickers. If we pull back a bit and look at the larger picture, there’s something of a mature, dark fairy tale thing going on here; an undertone that feels rich and full of secrets.
Of course it’s more than possible we’re reacting more to her speech, which deserves far more attention than the dress:
Sometimes we joke about the number of “Power of Women/Women of the Year/Incredible Women” entertainment industry events that pop up throughout awards season, but a speech like that reminds us of the value of these gatherings and what good can arise out of all the finery, posing and speech-making.
