Miss Katy took our suggestion to heart, but now we have to be the bitches to tell her that it’s not working. We said recently that she’s at her best when she straddles that line between high fashion and cartoon character. When she veers too far into one side or the other, she comes off either campy and silly or mature and grandiose. She can do big dramatic looks, so long as there’s a wink and an implied thought balloon and she can do the draggy, costume stuff so long as it’s got a certain chicness to it. She’s not, for instance, a Lady Gaga, who can work tacky and draggy and even dingy in a way that feels like an art student putting on a performance piece. Anyway, we’re a bit confused by this look, because even though it straddles that line, it somehow manages the rare trick of pulling all the triggers at once. In other words …
She looks campy, cartoony, grandiose and somehow stale, all at the same time. It’s just a bit too “drag mother” and not enough “cartoon diva.”
To be fair, she’s not the problem here. We don’t love the platinum blonde for her because we think it makes her instantly less noticeable or unique, but her styling here is gorgeous.
But we canNOT with that bodice. Not even a tiny little bit. It’s an awful design, a total “I’m sorry but you’re out. Auf Wiedersehen” sort of dress. And that blue does nothing for her. Get this girl some hair dye and a red dress, stat.
