Looks like the folks at Bravo listened to our recent podcast chock full of un-asked-for advice on what to do with Project Runway now that Heidi, Tim and Zac have all flown the coop. Christian and Karlie were two of the names we bandied about (although we assumed she wouldn’t be interested what with her upcoming wedding plans). The Hollywood Reporter has the deetz:
The series has tapped supermodel and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss as its host, with former Project Runway champion and CFDA fashion designer Christian Siriano as mentor for the rebooted franchise. They will be joined by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell and former Teen Vogue editor in chief Elaine Welteroth, who will serve as judges. Nina Garcia will return as a judge.
We don’t have much to add to that except that we’re intrigued and we think this might work. We don’t know what Maxwell and Welteroth will be like as judges, but we love that there’s finally a black woman on the permanent judging panel and we like how the panel is skewing much younger in focus all of a sudden. With Nina sitting in as the Grande Dame of the judging panel now (and presumably in much better position to influence the other judges), this might actually be the shot in the arm the show needs. We like that Christian is serving as the mentor and not one of the judges. He’s a good judge, as PR Juniors showed, but we think he’s better guiding the designers through the process rather than coming up with bitchy critiques.
A month ago, we thought PR might be dead and gone, but this news has us looking forward to the new season. If nothing else, it will be the first time in years Project Runway won’t feel like a show going through the motions.
