Toronto International Film Festival Style File: Thandie Newton in Magda Butrym and Oscar de la Renta

Posted on September 12, 2018

You know how, in The Devil Wears Prada, it’s a mark of how good she is at her job that Anne Hathaway can shout out “I HAVE PATRICK” whenever Patrick DeMarchelier calls her boss? That’s sort of the scene around here when there’s a Thandie sighting. When we have two in one week, the “WE HAVE THANDIE” shrieking can get downright deafening. What can we say? We love a gal who knows how to be chic and fun with her style.

This would be the fun part. That gorgeous hair is doing all the work of making sure this dress doesn’t look like it came straight from a Freshman Dance in 1986. We’d say this isn’t a style or silhouette for everyone, but it’s hard point to make when she’s making it look so effortless. We love the colors and love this silhouette on her. Big no on the shoes, though. They came right out of left field.

And this would be the chic part. We’ve seen a TON of velvet on these pages in the last few weeks, but this may be our favorite so far. The design is simple, which is all it needs to be because the texture and color are rich and luxe. Again, the hair’s doing a great job of finishing the look. The earrings are gorgeous. And not to make too fine a point of it, but the ratio of her bust size to the width and plunge of that neckline is about as perfect as we’ve seen.
