The awards season game is afoot and Miss Julia, never the most fashion-indulgent of stars, is putting in the effort to make some chic, high-impact statements early on. In other words, she’s throwing down the style gauntlet.
Julia Roberts at the “Homecoming” Premiere in Givenchy Couture
As much as these two queens love the deployment of capes on the red carpet, this chic and smart jumpsuit didn’t need … whatever those things are hanging off the back of the sleeves. Sleeve-capes? That really shouldn’t be a thing.
But as we said, we love this jumpsuit otherwise. She picked up her Oscar in an instantly iconic black-and-white gown and it’s a combo she’s never stopped loving since. We tend to complain about the lack of color in most red carpetry, but this has been a pretty colorful year overall, so we don’t mind the lack of it as much as we sometimes do. Besides, she’s no fool. She returns to B&W so much because it happens to look great on her.
Julia Roberts at the “Ben Is Back” Premiere in Dsquared2
We are so not feeling the puffy hair do.
Still, this is a really fabulous look for her. Much as we tend to rail against side cutouts in gowns, some ladies have exactly the right proportions for it. The pointy shoulders really balance the look out and play to her style strengths, which tend to be somewhat Joan Crawford-like: strong and bold, with a hint of menswear to it.
We don’t like what little we can see of the shoe choice, however. And we think this could’ve benefited from at least one strong jewelry piece.
