Toronto International Film Festival Style File: Amandla Stenberg in Alice McCall, Gucci and Prada

Posted on September 10, 2018

Amandla’s been out there, doing the damn work. And while we don’t love every choice they made, there’s an admirably wide range of styles on display here. Amandla recently noted in an interview that too often, people lump them, Yara Shahidi and Zendaya together and it was a point that made us pause and consider if we’ve done that. We’d like to say we’ll keep it at the forefront of our minds as we write about them, but to be honest, all three have a similar approach to style. We’d say Amandla’s is slightly funkier and slightly more youthful in tone, but like Zendaya and Yara, Amandla has a love of modern, fresh, boundary-pushing takes on fashion as well as a love of going really clean and simple every now and then. But they made a good point and we’ll be more considerate in making that comparison going forward.

It’s a fun and slightly cute way to do a photo call (which are usually much more casual as celebrity promo events go) in a cold and rainy city. It’s slightly too après-ski for our tastes, but that might have to do more with our dislike of turtlenecks. We also would’ve liked to have seen anything but white footwear here.

May as well address the metallic elephant in the room first. That bodice. It’s a no. The rest of the dress we could take or leave, but that big unlikely breast plate sitting there for no good reason is a total wrong turn. And the real shame of it is, that hair is amazing. It so deserved a better frock than this.

The bold eyeshadow and gorgeous hair take an understated and chic dress and turn it into something modern and well-interpreted for the person wearing it. They nailed it. This is the kind of look where we really have a hard time not seeing Yara or Zendaya wearing it the same way. This isn’t to say we think they’re copying anyone else; just that there are similar approaches and tastes at play here.
