Katy Perry in Tom Ford at the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean 2018

Priding ourselves on our ability to read a room, we’re sheathing our claws today and letting the style choices of the ladystars speak for themselves. It’s just not the day for our brand of bitchy.

But honestly, even in regular bitchmode, we don’t think we’d trash this. It’s admirably different from the normal red carpet fare. Despite the highly unusual shape and design elements, we think this works really well for her. There’s something goofily “Star Trek” about the look. That’s not a style direction we’d have picked for her, but in retrospect, it makes a little sense. Her style sweet spot is somewhere between standard glamour and something in the cartoonish range, without tipping too far over into either style. We’re being kinder than we normally would and that’s by choice, but it really does come close to threading a certain style needle for her; one that she’s had a bit of a journey trying to transition into, if that makes any sense. Maybe Tom Ford’s a good fit for her.
