And now, drag queens.
Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier Couture
It feels like everyone kind of abandoned their earlier, more distinct style roles and ran headlong into tacky this week. Perhaps it was the category for this particular drag ball. Anyway, we like this more than we probably should. Everything above the waist suits the Kluminator to a tee. It’s got a fun, circa 1980 drapey glamour to it. The skirt is where it all goes off the rails. The design was overwrought enough. It didn’t need the skirt getting all hysterical on itself there. Something a little sleeker might have come off too literally retro, but it would’ve balanced this out considerably.
Is it us or does this reek of consignment shop? Yes, that’s really bitchy of us, but it just looks so… mid-range and dated.
Did you see there, how we tried to excuse a bitchy comment by making an even bitchier one? Sly bitches, that’s us.
Tyra Banks in Usama Ishtay
Gotta hand it to Miss Tyra. If there’s anyone who can beat Heidi Klum at her own game, it’s her. And while she’s giving it an admirable go, the dress is too badly designed for us to sign off on it. A one-shoulder dress WITH A SINGLE PADDED SHOULDER is a bad enough idea, but to pair it with side cutouts and a total craft store full of Christmas glitter takes this frock into seriously awful territory. The crunchy hair isn’t helping.
