The thing about Miss Issa’s style choices: you never quite know which direction she’s going to go or what designer she’s going to wear. In terms of styles and go-to houses, she constantly shakes things up. Given how much she does this and how dazzling the results tend to be, is it any wonder we tend to hand the spotlight over to her so often?
Issa Rae at the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Vera Wang
Having gushed for the intro paragraph, we can now turn toward the hard truth of the matter: Much as we found both of these looks kind of interesting for various reasons, we can’t say we’re a hundred percent on either one of them. Love the color here. Love the idea of a jumpsuit with a train. It strikes us as just the kind of quirky design best handled by her. But the cut of the pants isn’t so hot, the irregular neckline looks wonky and the trim gives it a figure-skating costume feel. An interesting choice, but ultimately a bunch of elements that didn’t combine well.
Issa Rae at the HBO’s Post Emmy Awards Reception in Fausto Puglisi
We liked this just for being Fausto Puglisi, a designer who doesn’t get as much red carpet exposure as he probably should. Love the blocking and the color story, but those straps are like a visual needle scratch.
