Emmys 2018: Sandra Oh Gets Let Down in Ralph & Russo Couture

Posted on September 18, 2018

We’re sorry to say, it was a disappointing night all around for Miss Sandra, who’d already broken records just by being an Asian woman nominated in a dramatic lead role. We wanted her to walk home with the trophy, but the Academy had other thoughts. Worse, we couldn’t console ourselves with the thought that she nailed the fashion for the night.

Because she didn’t. This is overdesigned, rendered in garish competing reds, with questionable textile finishes and cheap-looking beading. We were honestly shocked to find out it was Ralph & Russo couture. They can get pretty glitzy at times, but this really tips perilously close to tacky. The top half of the dress is okay (even if the beading looks like cheap plastic craft beads). The skirt is just impossible to pull off, from what we can see. There’s just too much going on visually for this to ever come off chic. She looks gorgeous despite it, however. Her hair and makeup are great.
