Venice Film Festival: Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga at the “A Star Is Born” Photocall

Posted on August 31, 2018

You know how you can tell an upcoming movie has serious awards buzz?

The stars dress for the photo call as if they were attending a premiere.

Granted, the Venice Film Festival de-docking pictures have been uncommonly stylish this year, but even so. Bradley’s dressing for the PR game and Steffi’s serving her best movie star drag. They look pretty great. Even if we had quibbles, we’d probably keep them to ourselves, since they’re getting off a boat in fine suiting and heels.

We find hand-holding in staged pictures by co-stars – and in this case, a director and his female lead – to be a little goofy, to be honest. But that might have something to do with this:

She walked downstairs and there he was, staring at her. He stepped toward her, examined her face: concealer, mascara, rouge.

“Take it off,” Bradley Cooper told Lady Gaga.

She noticed something in his hand. It was a makeup wipe. With it, he erased the colors from her forehead down to her chin.

Yuck. So he was just standing there with a makeup wipe in his hand, waiting for her to enter the room? That’s one of those PR-crafted stories (it’s no coincidence that this sounds exactly like a scene from the film) that gets passed around the various people in charge of it, with none of them realizing that it might sound creepy or weird to anyone not working in the entertainment industry. They really want to sell the hell out of this as some sort of uncommonly intense and emotional cinematic experience.
