First Look: “The Romanoffs” from “Mad Men” Creator Matthew Weiner

Posted on August 15, 2018

We didn’t know what to expect when we first heard about this series and we have to be a bit honest here: we still don’t quite know what to expect now that we’ve seen the teaser trailer:

First thought: Wow, that comes off way more precious than Mad Men. Almost Woody Allen-esque in tone. Second thought: Fun to see Mad Men alums John Slattery, Christina Hendricks, Jay R. Ferguson and Cara Buono in the mix. Said mix being a pretty astonishing lineup of actors. We wish we could say Weiner was the main draw for us here, given how much we adored his previous series, but until we see or hear a bit more about this one, the cast remains the main draw.

We don’t know why we’re sounding so skeptical. It’s not like this was rushed into production or slapped together. We get the impression that it will be as meticulously plotted as any season of Mad Men ever was, even if the tone feels totally different. It’s billed as an anthology series but we’d be surprised if it doesn’t all wrap up in a bow by season’s end.

We’re in, of course. Given the lineup (including costume designer Janie Bryant), we can’t not be. We’re just not sold on the tone or the framing conceit. Not yet, anyway.

From the creator of Mad Men, The Romanoffs is a contemporary anthology series set around the globe featuring eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Diane Lane, Isabelle Huppert, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Amanda Peet, Jack Huston, Kathryn Hahn, Noah Wyle, Paul Reiser, Andrew Rannells and more.

Series premiere October 12, 2018.
