Darlings, never let it be said we don’t own up when our prognostications don’t pan out. We got this one VERY wrong, it would seem. We wrote the other day about her being all glamorous and movie star in her style choices for this promo tour, comparing it to the somewhat quirkier styles she wore when she was doing the poledance for Ocean’s 8. Turns out? The quirk has not been abandoned. NOT REMOTELY:
Here’s what: This is pretty cray, but we think we can be talked into loving it. We’re having very good feelings about it, despite some quibbles. We don’t love the crop top or the bright pink shoes, but we have to admit, the Westwood punk pantsuit is pretty freaking fabulous. It suits her so well and it’s one more way this cast is using high fashion to promote a fresher, more modern and almost aggressively high-end image of Asian celebrities. If we can be permitted an observation: The Black Panther cast similarly recognized the cultural importance of their moment and collectively opted to dress in styles that evoked Afro-futurism or African cultural motifs. The Crazy Rich Asians cast is taking the opposite approach: avoiding obvious cultural motifs and promoting themselves and the movie as a worldwide, mass-appeal audience event. The looks have been high-fashion in the Hollywood Glam, British Dandy, Fashionista, and Rocker Chick modes.
