For various reasons, we’ve had a ton of RuPaul’s Drag Race on our brains lately, which makes it especially fun to see the show positioned once again at the heights of pop culture success. It doesn’t get much better for a reality show than an Emmy nomination and it doesn’t get better for a drag queen than an honest-to-god red carpet moment.
Having said that, we’ve always found it interesting how even very good drag isn’t always well suited to the typical red carpet.
We can’t bring ourselves to critique them too hard. It’s not like Dior and Cartier are offering them their pick of items. These are costumes, of course. Aquaria, to no one’s surprise, comes closest to offering something that feels like fashion, but even her makeup is a bit too harsh. The lighting of the average red carpet doesn’t lend itself well to a lot of drag makeup styles. Still, if we must be bitches about it, we’ll say that Asia and Aquaria are offering the most polished looks. Eureka’s is just too goofy and Kameron’s looks like a fancy bathrobe.
Carson, you were the OG Queer Eye fashion expert. We expect better from you. It’s just not a very photogenic look. The cuffs and the widely spaced plaid are just too distracting. Plus the fit’s not so great. Tsk.
