2018 Emmy Nominations (with our scattered opinions)

Posted on July 12, 2018

No time for foreplay, kittens! Let’s get down to brass tacks!

DRAMA SERIES
The Americans
The Crown
Game of Thrones
The Handmaid’s Tale
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld

No to the last four on this list. It’s a tough pick, but we think The Americans probably deserves its victory lap.

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA
Jason Bateman, Ozark
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
Ed Harris, Westworld
Matthew Rhys, The Americans
Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
Jeffrey Wright, Westworld

Again, the only one that appeals to us here is Matthew Rhys – and we weren’t even following the show all that hard in the end. But the Westworld guys were wasted this season and This is Us is over-rewarded.

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA
Claire Foy, The Crown
Sandra Oh, Killing Eve
Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
Keri Russell, The Americans

Once again, we’re inclined to predict The Americans’ Keri Russell, but as much as we loved Claire Foy and Tatiana Maslany, we have to say we’d pick Sandra Oh, who’s honestly one of the best actors in television, in our opinion.

COMEDY SERIES
Atlanta
Barry
Black-ish
Curb Your Enthusiasm
GLOW
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Silicon Valley
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

GLOW GLOW GLOW

We will accept no substitutes.

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY
Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
Ted Danson, The Good Place
Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Donald Glover, Atlanta
Bill Hader, Barry
William H. Macy, Shameless

Pass. We haven’t seen enough of the work to judge, except for Ted Danson and we tend to think he’s a long shot simply for being one of the most lauded actors in TV history.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY
Pamela Adlon, Better Things
Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Allison Janney, Mom
Issa Rae, Insecure
Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie

Ditto. This just wasn’t our year to follow comedies religiously, it seemes. We’ve seen almost everyone on this list, but not enough to have an opinion as to who’s the best.

LIMITED SERIES
The Alienist
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Genius: Picasso
Godless
Patrick Melrose

We’re inclined to split the vote between Melrose and Versace, even though we had issues with both. If you threatened to set our closets on fire, we suppose we’d have to pick the Versace one.

LEAD ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Jessica Biel, The Sinner
Laura Dern, The Tale
Michelle Dockery, Godless
Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake: China Girl
Edie Falco, Law and Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Regina King, Seven Seconds
Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Cult

Laura Dern, but we fully admit that we stan and also that we haven’t seen half the others.

LEAD ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso
Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
Jeff Daniels, The Looming Tower
John Legend, Jesus Christ Superstar; Live in Concert
Jesse Plemons, U.S.S. Callister: Black Mirror

We’re THRILLED that Jesse Plemons got a nod for that supremely creepy, but also somewhat hilarious performance. As much as we were impressed with Darren Criss and as much as we bitched about Patrick Melrose, we think Cumberbatch is probably a likely win.

REALITY COMPETITION SERIES
The Amazing Race
American Ninja Warrior
Project Runway
RuPaul’s Drag Race
Top Chef
The Voice

Drag Race, of course.

VARIETY TALK SERIES
The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
The Late Late Show with James Corden
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Pass. We watch none of them.

VARIETY SKETCH SERIES
At Home with Amy Sedaris
Drunk History
I Love You, America
Portlandia
Saturday Night Live
Tracey Ullman’s Show

We’re partial to Amy Sedaris although we think she’s a long shot.
