Her recent turn toward Broadway left Miss Tina a lot less interested in red carpet style; something she was never much interested in to begin with. She’d managed, after years of TV and film stardom, to reach a sort of detente with the world of style, sticking with mostly simply and unfussy looks that could occasionally come off chic without too much effort on her part. But in the last year or so, as Mean Girls shaped up and took off, her sporadic red carpet appearances had taken a more mumsy/frumpy tone, which is why the sight of her in a silver Thom Browne gown was such a shock to us. Miss Tina? Getting all high fashion and high glam? Allow us to affix our opera glasses in place so we can lean in for a closer assessment.
It took us a minute or two to come around, but we love this for her. Everything from (roughly) the knees up is very much in the business-like, unfussy Fey mode, which makes the exuberant bottom half of the skirt such a pleasant surprise. At first we weren’t sure if the top and bottom truly married well, but in the end, we decided that this was a fairly accurate representation of Tina’s own personality and work approach: business-like, smart, and surprisingly fun. It also helps that she simply looks amazing in it. She should wear silver more often.
