With the first half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s final season out in time for Emmy consideration, Miss Ellie’s got some work to do on two fronts. She’s got to remind everyone of her character and the great work she’s done on the show so they’ll consider her for an Emmy nomination, but she’s also got to start looking toward the horizon and reminding people that she’s not her character, but a talented, beautiful actress at the top of her game.
Sure, it’s possible we’re overthinking this. But when you consider the following looks in that context, they make sense and the choices make her look pretty savvy.

While we can’t say this looks like anything Kimmy ever wore on the show, it’s still referencing girly, juvenile style and even manages to work in a butterfly among the flowers. It’s what Kimmy would wear if she was a little more sophisticated (but only a little, because we don’t want to oversell this frock, which is largely not to our tastes) and had a lot more money.
Then there’s the “Hi, I’m Ellie Kemper, at the top of my game” look:

We don’t think we’ve ever seen her come off so polished and low-key chic. She looks great. The color really sings on her and we don’t even mind the slightly goofy foofaraw at the neckline. Our only quibble is with the shape of the skirt, which flares out at a point that strikes us a little odd. Still, it’s sophisticated, stylish and very flattering. Nicely done.
