Leap-frogging off the whole point of our last post, here’s Miss Ruth, continuing the much-appreciated entertainer tradition of bringing some light and color into the world. And much like Mr. Jeff’s rather challenging, if charming take on style, she’s not only giving us something to look at, but something to wrestle with.
Personally, we think the dress is perfect for her, although the print goes back and forth on the chic-to-gaudy scale. We don’t mind the design of the print so much as the placement of it, with that massive yoke effect that sort of throws the rest of the design off. It takes a minute to realize that the dress itself is extremely simple in shape and style. With the high, boxy hair, round shades and clunky heels, the whole thing feels very ’90s but with a slightly freshened-up feel to it. We don’t know. We could see the arguments that there’s more wrong than right with this. The hair’s certainly something to contend with. But she’s in her sweet spot when she gets to work slightly odd, vaguely retro looks. We’re not sure we’ve ever seen her play around in this particular decade, but we’d love to see her do it more, based on the eye-catching qualities of this look.
