Darlings, as we may have noted a time or two, the celebrity style pickins were slim this week. Fortunately, we settled on two distinct, stylish and high-impact looks. Unfortunately, they only run the gamut from “classic with a slight twist” to “classic with a big twist,” leaving you with slightly similar styles, if wildly different looks to debate.
T’s Pick: Alison Brie in Erdem at the Netflix FYSEE Event for “GLOW”.
T’s Defense: It’s no surprise she looks good in period clothes, since her two biggest and most notable roles were set in the ’60s and the ’80s, but it’s a surprise to see she looks really great working a ’30s/’40s aesthetic. The simple, conservative shape of the dress really works for her, helped along by some bold, modern colors and sparkly embellishments. Still not entirely convinced the silver shoes were the right way to go, but they, along with the rest of it, have a feel of fresh modernity underneath the retro shapes and styles.
L’s Pick: Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton at the Louis Vuitton Resort 2019 Fashion Show.
Lo’s Defense: I WORSHIP THIS WOMAN. I’m pretty sure she can wear anything and make it look fabulous, but I like that she knows herself well enough to stick with bold, iconic, almost cartoony styles that really play to her strengths. I suspect she knows she’s got a Josephine Baker/Betty Boop thing going on, because she sure dresses like she does. This is more in the Boop mode; bright, bold, simple and graphic. But it’s also modern and strange and requires you to work a little to take it all in. I know it’s not a look for everyone, but I really just adore it because it’s bright, colorful and very high-fashion.
So which one’s it gonna be, hotshot?
