Pop Style Opinionfest: Butterfly Massacre!

Posted on June 29, 2018

Kittens, to perhaps no one’s surprise, there was only one topic to be had in this week’s podcast. We figured the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race’s tenth season rated a deep-dive and our undivided attention, so we cleared the decks and hashed every bit of it out. From the show’s humble beginnings to its status as a worldwide phenonomenon today, and how we feel about that, as two people who were there writing about the show on day one and have recapped every single episode since. We’ve got a perspective, is what we’re trying to say. And not just on how the show has changed, but on how this particular finale demonstrated a sad failure of imagination on the part of the finalists. Not just Asia’s rather horrifying and in retrospect, alarmingly ill-considered butterfly stunt, but the fact that literally all the queens showed up to lip synch with gimmicks at the ready, confusing the success of Sasha Velour’s emotional wig reveal of last season with any sort of half-assed dress reveal, wig change, or exploding prop.

And of course, those very costumes and wigs are rated as well. Would you expect any less of us, darlings?

In the end, we bickered a bit over what it all meant, but came to roughly the same conclusion. It is what it is, folks. And we honestly can’t name anyone else who should’ve won that crown. Anyway, it’s all there, ready for you to dive in and take a listen.

Thank you once again for all your support, dolls! And don’t forget to tell your bus driver and street sweeper about us!
