The news came just a nanosecond before the pictures did: The Duchess is wearing Prada today! Oh, kittens. We rushed off to the wires immediately to snag some shots, naively thinking Miuccia had provided Megs with something a little colorful or shimmery; something that really spoke to the Prada aesthetic and represented the brand. Imagine our disappointment when we clapped eyes on another Silly Putty-colored pile of minimalism.
It’s like Michelle Obama cosplay with all the color stripped out of it.
But before you all yell at us, we’ll walk that reaction back just a smidge. Yes, her entire post-wedding official wardrobe has been similarly neutral or colorless, which is more than a little dull over time. On the other hand, except for Trooping the Colour and Ascot, the other events basically called for neutrality, especially since two of them involved sitting next to the Queen, who prefers to sport rich and bright colors in order to give the public a little something to look at and to find her easily in any crowd or picture. And while these choices aren’t made on the fly and tend to be planned out fairly well in advance (especially if she’s wearing custom pieces) we can’t help thinking the ongoing mortification provided by her deeply fucked-up father would have anyone picking please-don’t-look-at-me style choices. She may think she has good reason to keep things so low-key and understated, or she may just be tentatively feeling her way around the role and the image she wants to project. Considering her natural instincts as a performer, we wonder if she’s not managing this so tightly so that the next time she wears a red dress, the press goes wild with coverage.
This is lovely, though, even if it is a little dull. We’re not huge fans of irregular or handkerchief hems, but it’s one of the few elements that help give the look a little personality.
