CFDA Awards 2018: Cate Blanchett Forces Some Questions in Monse

Posted on June 05, 2018

We’ve been steadily whining since last night that this year’s CFDA Awards red carpet was shockingly dull and standard, so when we caught a glimpse of Good Lady Cate wearing what looked to be yet another take on the ladytux, we got out our red pens and prepared to make vicious editing marks all over her. Metaphorically speaking.

Good Lady Cate, we humbly beg your forgiveness for ever doubting that you would bring some hardcore fashion shit to the proceedings.

We… don’t hate it. And believe us, we really tried to. But it occurred to us after a few moments of huffing and puffing that this design is challenging in a way that asks you to consider it, as well as the traditional designs it’s riffing on. It’s not pretty or stylish in the expected way, but it’s striking and it’s forcing a juxtaposition/mashup of traditionally masculine and feminine design elements in a way that seems kind of fresh to us. In 2018, at the CFDAs, Cate Blanchett making us all work to consider aspects of gender presentation in fashion is about as right as it gets. We should have never doubted you, GLC.
