Jesus protect us for what we’re about to say, but this is one of the most heavily Madonna-referential looks we’ve seen from her in ages.
Granted, Madge didn’t invent the idea of fetishwear-based fashion, although she did more to popularize it than probably any other single figure. And really, you take any Italian-American pop star with a taste for peroxide, a sense of theatricality and a talent for pushing buttons, those comparisons are going to be made, no matter what. They’re inescapable, is what we’re trying to say. Just as Harry Styles will spend his career fending off Mick comparisons, Steffi is probably going to be waving the Madonna ones off with annoyance well into her dotage, fair or not. And in this case, we don’t think any of it’s truly deliberate. Girlfriend should be able to rock a McQueen and a shock of white hair if she wants to.
Still, the platinum wet-look bob in combo with the dark brows, leather bodice and molded cups – it’s a pretty specific sort of look. Which isn’t to say she doesn’t look great – her makeup in particular is the best we’ve seen on her in a long while.
