Kittens, a million jokes about bad resort hotel decor or L’Esprit ads or ’80s girl group album covers are bubbling forth, just begging to be made here. But we find ourselves unwilling to do the work to build up to a punchline because we’re far too delighted by the whole thing:
Come on, that is just pure fun. And any time we try to visualize an edit – like pairing the top or pants with something else – it seems like the whole point of the look is thrown away. This works (for us at least) precisely because it’s a fully matched ensemble. And while can see all the arguments as to why this doesn’t work for some, the fact that it’s referential to a specific decade isn’t one of them. Fashion that references the past isn’t anything new or inherently wrong. It can definitely be rendered in less-than interesting or imaginative ways, but retro-inspired fashion has been a thing for almost as long as fashion has been a thing.
What can we say? It’s fun. It’s cute. We love it.
