Met Gala 2018: Madonna, Dowager Queen of Sicily, in Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

Posted on May 08, 2018

Like White Jesus-faced Jared Leto, Madonna was someone who had to get this Met Gala look exactly right, considering both her name and the lifetime she has spent using the iconography of the Catholic church in her work and art. If you are literally synonymous with the theme of the Met Gala, people are going to form some high expectations about what you’re going to wear. And considering the somewhat dicey record she has on this particular red carpet, we felt there was good reason for concern.

But it is with GREAT relief that we can report… Miss Madonna Louise Ciccone NAILED it:

And she did it by playing to her strengths and avoiding cliche. Taking a goth approach and layering it over both Sicilian Widow drag and European royalty trappings combined to offer something that felt totally Madonna, totally right for this event, and a pleasant surprise to boot. Easily one of our favorite Madonna looks in years. She should have a stage-friendly version of this made for her next tour.
