We had to hash this one out like a presidential debate, which is kind of funny in retrospect, because it’s really not all that much of a look.
At first glance, we thought it was a pretty color, which is always nice to see on a Fanning. We also thought it had a sort of minimalist old-timey vibe to it, which would seem to be a good match to the project she’s promoting. The idea of it all seemed sound, on paper. It’s the details that did’t add up.
First, a bow tie over a halter neckline is a really weird design element, the more we think about it. Like a Chippendales dancer in dress form. Second, the cut of that halter bodice is way too steep on the sides. We don’t say that from a prudish perspective. If this was a slinky gown or something, plunge away, we say. But the sweet little day dress style doesn’t work with that kind of suddenly sexy side view. Third, the waist seam bugs, although that is admittedly a minor issue. For some reason, picturing a belt over it doesn’t appeal either. It would go a little costume-y, we think.
Fix the cut of the halter and rip off that horrible bow. We probably wouldn’t notice the waist seam at all if the rest of it was edited and corrected.
