The women of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival have been pushing back against patriarchal attitudes and practices in the industry in ways both big and small.
Granted, when you’re Kristen Stewart doing your Chanel bit in front of a phalanx of international press, maybe there’s no such thing as a small gesture.
Miss Girl quite sensibly looked at those steps and her dress code-mandated heels and said “Fuck this noise.” Sometimes the best social or political protests come from people who are tired of nonsense and just don’t feel like giving into it. Still, we shouldn’t discount the stagecraft of this moment. She could’ve shown up in sneakers or flats to make her protest. Like the performer she is, she chose to act it out in front of the press. This is of a piece with what we said yesterday about the red carpet as a venue for social or political protests: it works when the “queens” of the venue lead the way. People who’ve made their careers in part by utilizing the red carpet well (the K Stews and Blanchetts) are people who understand its possibilities and restrictions better than most.
Also, it took focus off that hideous Chanel jawn, so it’s a win all around.
