Cannes 2018: Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Couture at the “Capharnaum” Screening: IN or OUT?

Posted on May 18, 2018

It feels very strange and wrong for us to be putting a Blanchett look up to a vote, since the universe has largely come to an agreement that everything Good Lady Cate wears is automatically chic by virtue of the fact that she has deigned to wear it. But we have to be honest here: the details on this one aren’t quite adding up for us.

The Good Lady can certainly rock a pair of pin-striped pants. And she has a long history of rocking super-frilly, almost ridiculous pieces that she manages to tame by sheer force of will. We like the pants half and like the basic idea (if not every detail) of the top half, but we don’t think they work all that well together. There’s just too many frills, flounces and pleats going on north of her waist. It took several passes for us just to realize she wasn’t wearing little lace gloves (a fact that relieved us to no end). Strangely enough, we think the top half would work fine if it continued into a gown-length skirt rather than those chic, but badly matched pants. Are we wrong here? No, really. We’re asking.
