Cannes 2018: Carey Mulligan Gives Us Classic Hollywood Princess in Dior Couture at the “Wildlife” Photocall

And now, a quietly chic little formal dinner napkin of a dress, from the House of Dior:

We went into this one all ready to rake it over the coals for being blandly colored and minimalist in design, but just a few seconds of taking it in had us convinced that not a thing should be changed or edited here. She’s not a high-glam sort of lady, so expecting more than chic minimalism from her is expecting the unlikely. She’s landed on a fairly good direction for her red carpet style to go: Grace Kelly cosplay. We wouldn’t have figured that out, but kudos to whoever did. She looks great in it. Elegant and reserved in a way that tends to speak to her personality. The hair, earrings and lip are what make this look – and that’s so very Grace Kelly. Not in a literal sense, of course; just that this is taking the basic tenets of her iconic style, whether intentional or not, and applying chic, modern versions to someone who’s surprisingly well-suited to it. More of this, Miss Carey.
