2018 Billboard Music Awards: Taylor Swift Didn’t Fool Around, in Atelier Versace

Posted on May 21, 2018

Darlings, believe us when we say the Billboard Music Awards completely blind-sided us this year. The last month of red carpetry was of such high caliber that we completely missed seeing this one on the horizon. After an unusually well-interpreted Met Gala (because dressing up like royalty or popes plays into celebrity delusions of grandeur so neatly) and an unusually haute couture sort of Cannes Film Festival (because the jury contained world-class red carpet queens Kristen Stewart and Cate Blanchett), we careened headlong into the biggest fashion event of the year (judging by our exploding numbers), the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Once the dust settled on that, we looked at the schedule for the week, noted the BBMAs and said more or less “Okay, we’ll get some content out of this but it’ll be mostly B-list.” Cut to 6 hours later, as a post-wedding coverage exhausted T Lo watched one A-lister after another show up in jaw-dropping outfits: “WAIT I THOUGHT THE BILLBOARD AWARDS WERE LIKE THE CMAS WITHOUT COWBOY HATS WHAT IS HAPPENING?!???

It really has been quite an eye-popping few months on the red carpet. We blame the Black Panther crew, who shamed everyone else into upping their game.

Anyway, this all preamble to the fact that Miss Tay brought it with her:

We’re not saying we love this – in fact we don’t; not at all – but it’s sure as hell not nothing. It reportedly took over 800 hours to make and it looks it. We don’t love the color or the style and find some of the design elements overwrought in a typically Versace sort of way. Also, the shoes are terrible for it and the blinding white lining is distracting. Still, it’s an impressive dress and distinctly high-fashion look for a music awards show. We don’t love it, but we respect it. And there was more where that came from on this red carpet, to our pleasant (if frantic) surprise.
