Oscars 2018 Style File: Zendaya Serves up Eleganza in Earth Tones, in Giambattista Valli and Michael Kors

Posted on March 06, 2018

Can’t really say there are any surprises here. Anyone who pays attention to Miss Z’s red carpetry figured she’d show up at the Oscars looking elegant and dramatic. Which isn’t to suggest we’re bored or disappointed here. Once you’ve established your Chic Celebrity Fashionista bona fides, everyone just expects that you’re going to look amazing on major red carpets. Congratulations, Zendaya darling. You’re now in the ranks of Cate, Lupita, Tilda and Janelle. The down side is, we’re all going to be bitchy about it when you disappoint us.

We really appreciate the unusual color choice. You just don’t see a lot of brown on Oscar night. The design has real sweep and drama, which is what you want for this red carpet, but the neckline truly bugs.

And maybe we’re being boring traditionalists about it, but we think gold jewelry makes a lot more sense than diamonds. This is what happens when big-name jewelers have a lock on what everyone wears to the Oscars. You get way too many diamonds.

If she was doing some sort of promo tour, we might have grumpily asked for this to be in a bolder color. Picture this in pink, for example, and she immediately goes Drag Barbie, which would be fun for a premiere. But for an actress like her, who’s really just making a splash now after serving her first notable turns in big hit movies, it might be a little smart to temper your natural fashion exuberance with some low-key color choices. We generally don’t like beige-y dresses on the red carpet, but she looks really elegant here. LOVE the hair.
