Oscars 2018 Style File: Mary J. Blige Was Perfection in Atelier Versace and Vera Wang

Posted on March 05, 2018

In many ways, Mary J. Blige’s style choice for the Oscars were very much in line with the general tone of the night: uncomplicated gowns in basic colors, with the occasional bit of flair or embellishment to keep it from being generic. A curiously modest sort of Hollywood glam. But Miss Mary’s two looks stood out to us because they remained somewhat simple in shape and style, but they were so impeccable and well-suited to her.

When we were trying to predict what she’d wear, we noted her love of bare arm and sweeping drama with touches of luxury, all of which you can see here. We also predicted that “sparkle, fit and killer hair are near-definites,” which makes this just about the most on-point of our pre-show predictions. And while we love the sparkle and the killer hair, it’s the stunning fit that really makes this dress sing on her. The earrings are, no surprise, drop-dead gorgeous. It was one of our favorite red carpet looks of the night.

But then she followed that up with our hands-down favorite stage look of the night:

There are no wheels being reinvented her or even envelopes being pushed. You could take this same dress, put it on an opera diva, and have it work just as well. That makes it something a bit broader in style than Miss Mary’s usual brand of diva, which tends to call for a bit more sparkle or sex appeal. This is chic and elegant, but has that sweep, drama, and even sense of luxury she finds appealing. In other words, she’s styled both for herself and for the occasion. Nicely done.
