When we did our rundown of her awards-season red carpetry and sussed out her preferences, we noted that, despite the wide range of looks and styles she tends to choose, she has a consistent love of metallics, modesty, and a certain sense of subtle whimsy. That’s a fairly broad description on which to rest a prediction, but it sure looks to us like that’s exactly what she chose here:
We like it, but we’re not sure we love it. The color and ombre effect are a bit too subtle for a red carpet like this. While it’s clearly a silver gown, it reads like a whole lot of gray to us. She stuck to her preferences and certainly showed up Oscar-night appropriate, but we find ourselves wishing for a little more. Given the relative plainness of the design (sparkle and shoulders notwithstanding, it’s a long tunic with a tie sash), it could have used some more exciting detailing. One thing many of her awards-season ensembles had was a sense of drama. This sparkly Leia gown doesn’t quite provide enough, we think. A simple fix would have been a bolder color. And a little more attention paid to that sash would not have been unwelcome here either. We think it needs to be a bit thicker, with a tie or bow that brings a little more emphasis. The tiny bow reads like a tight little knot.
We feel like we’re being a bit more critical than we intended to. The design is right for her. It’s just that the details let the look down.
