Overall, we have to say this Oscars red carpet was one of the more subdued in recent memory. There were few standout looks and the general vibe and tone was toward fairly simple designs, slim silhouettes, and pretty, soft, unchallenging embellishments. There were notable exceptions, of course, but the Oscars 2018 red carpet, in the wake of one of Hollywood’s most difficult years, wasn’t really about attention-seeking or over-the-top luxury or glam.
Which means that Margot Robbie’s look, which initially surprised us by how underplayed it was, is fairly representative of the style of the night overall.
It’s pretty and unchallenging, even if she does look like she has drugstore Christmas garland hanging off her. But it has a clean, modern romantic vibe that’s perfect for her. It wouldn’t have been our pick (or prediction), but we figure she knew she wasn’t going to win tonight. This is the kind of dress you pick when you want to make a good impression to a huge global audience but don’t need to blow your wad on something too challenging or over-the-top. It’s fine. It’s not slaying us with it’s fierceness, but it’s fine. It’s the head styling that’s the real disappointment. She looks pretty, of course, but such a plain dress at the Oscars sure could benefit from a killer do, a strong eye and earrings you can see from 20 feet away.
