We’re honestly a bit surprised we didn’t see more pants on ladystars at the Oscars this year. We know we said in that Vox interview last week that the red carpet pantsuit was on a downward trend, but we thought we’d get a bit more of a last gasp on the Oscars red carpet.
Miss Emma made a brave attempt:
And we honestly don’t think it worked.
We don’t want to be restrictive in our thinking, but the Oscars are a formal event. And while we have no problem with formal pantsuits for women and definitely don’t have a problem with ladytuxes, this ensemble just doesn’t look up to the dress code to us. It’s nice, it’s just not “tuxedo” nice. If nothing else, the lack of any buttons or closures and the use of a sash tend to bring down the formal feeling significantly.
But to be fully transparent about our thinking here, we have to admit we don’t love this design at all. The aforementioned sash just looks silly to us and the those puckering gathers in the jacket just give her a weird, wrinkly bust. We think our main issue here is that the look overall has only so-so fit and no real structure to speak of. This would be great for a premiere or a talk show, but it’s really not up to the Oscars red carpet.
