Kittens, a test.
You see, there are always two ways of looking at any red carpet ensemble. You can assess it based on ideas about good fashion design and your own taste preferences. Or you can assess it based on the impact or message that is being sent by the wearer. This is especially appropriate when dealing with matters of self-promotion. It is a test we in the bitchy fashion blogging community face every day. A test that has hardened and coarsened us. A test that has made us cynical and suspicious; possibly even a little bitter.
And now it’s your turn, darlings! Aren’t you lucky? It’s simple, really. Assess Miss Mindy’s dress:
Are the whimsical aspects just a bit distracting, both in their style and in their placement? Would the appliques not have worked better on a lighter background, like the look book looks? Are there design issues with the dress, such as those weird sleeve thingies and how poorly they coordinate with a halter strap?
Or, is she making a statement about how the film blends fantasy and a promotion of STEM careers for young women of color by wearing a whimsical dress with vaguely sciencey undertone to it?
YOU make the call! In other words…
