Lily James Covers Harper’s Bazaar UK April Issue

Posted on March 09, 2018

“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” actress Lily James covers the April 2018 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine photographed by Richards Phibbs and styled by Miranda Almond.

On being warned off meeting certain directors or producers alone: “I’ve gone to meetings where I’ve been like, ‘Hang on, this kind of feels like a date – why does this feel like a date?'” she says. “I was saying to my friend, sometimes it just seems that directors cast people who they want to sleep with… They’re not allowed to think like that any more. They’ll be scared to act like that. It might go too far but it’s good, because now that total misuse of power has been highlighted on the front page of every newspaper, on social media. It’s everywhere.”

On more women in positions of influence: writers, producers, directors: “I want to be surrounded more equally in our industry by men and women,” she says. Many times she’s been watching herself back in a movie, directed by a man, and thought “Noooooo.” James throws her hands to her face, as if seeing a horror film. “Often my stories are being told via a man, via their idea of what I should be.”
