We have this pet peeve about a certain type of style/celebrity coverage; the type that sees connections where there are none or insists on truths that are belied by anyone with a functioning pair of eyes. We’re talking about things like the endless posts and articles that come out every time Kate Middleton steps out in an outfit that can be tangentially connected to something her mother-in-law wore 30 years before (“Is Kate Sending a Message by Wearing Plaid, LIKE DIANA ONCE DID?”) or the ones that insist – INSIST – that Ava Phillippe, facial clone of her father Ryan, is a nearly indistinguishable twin of her mother Reese Witherspoon.
Said pet peeve came up again this week when Ava got a new, non-Mommy-matching haircut, which everyone then insisted made her look more like her Mom than ever. We sighed, kittens. We realize bloggers bitching about the online content wars is just a little precious, so we’ll shut up now.
Although if you really want to get into the weeds on this, the “Ava is Reese’s twin!” line always smelled like it came straight from someone’s publicist, considering how hard and how consistently (as in, every single time she makes an appearance) it’s pushed. We’re just saying.
Anyway, maybe the haircut signaled a newfound sense of identity for Miss Ava, because it sure looks like she got dressed to stand apart from her mom here:

And we can’t say we love it all that much. We’re puzzled by it, in fact. We don’t know of any 18-year-old who’d want to stand next to their mom in a dress this juvenile. It’s very cute, but we think it’s much better suited for the Storm Reids and Millie Bobby Browns of the world. This doesn’t read “ingenue,” it reads “child star.”

This looks great. We’re always saying Reese should stick to sheaths and other body-con styles, but she found an A-line skirt that looks terrific on her. We’d quibble with some of the details, like the high neckline doing little for her, or the fact that she shoes are borderline-wrong for the dress, but we think she’s giving her Southern Country Club spin on a sparkly, maternal Disney aesthetic. In other words, she Reese’d up her character’s costumes.
