WWD and CFDA’s “Runway to Red Carpet” Event Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on February 21, 2018

We’ve gotta say, for a celebrity fashion party, the red carpetry here was fairly disappointing. We wouldn’t say any of these gals look bad, exactly. But usually you can expect a bit more of an effort to stand out. Even celebrities want to impress fashion folks. At least the kind that show up for these events. Alas, only Miss January Jones truly brought her Cray A Game to this one.

Alison Brie in Giamba

It’s all … fine. Just sort of … there. The top is pretty cute, but the skirt just looks like a tablecloth. And we think if you’re going to commit to head-to-toe white lace on a day that isn’t your wedding day, you better bring something to it. That greige clutch is not up to the task.

Angela Sarafyan in Ingie Paris

We can’t say we love this look. This might sound a little snotty, but it looks very “catalogue” to us. Having said that, it’s dramatic enough and we can’t claim she looks bad in it. We might not have rec’d the matchy pumps, but it works well enough.

Jaime King in Dior

This one was a real surprise to us. We can always count on Miss Jaime to show up in something head-turning, if not jaw-dropping. Girlfriend brings the cray. But this tea-stained nightgown? Meh.

Lea Michele in Zuhair Murad

Weirdly, it was Miss Lea who wound up arriving in something pretty and photogenic. It’s not the most amazing look in the world, and we’re not entirely convinced that it even suits her, but the colors look great on her and it hits that sexy/sweet spot she tries so hard to land.

Olivia Munn in Veronica Beard

We don’t entirely hate this one, either. It seems odd to say this about a lemon-yellow jacket and mini skirt, but it feels pretty standard. Credit to her for wearing something with some oomph and visual interest to it, but we think every choice made after the yellow pieces was kind of a cliche, from the white shell to the naked sandal to the neutral clutch. A political message t-shirt in bold colors with, say… a pair of booties or oxfords, would’ve made this feel quite a bit fresher.

Then again, nothing’s gonna make that laceup skirt look classy or chic. Better to keep the jacket, pair it with jeans, and do everything else we said.
