The portraits themselves will receive more than their share of criticism and hand-wringing from people who’ve made careers out of wringing their hands over the Obamas and criticizing them. But we think both portraits are absolutely gorgeous and capture their subjects perfectly. They were a revolutionary First Couple and their portraits reflect that uniqueness and historical quality.
As for Shelley’s dress, it’s serious and sober, as the occasion demands (high frivolity in her fashion would’ve almost certainly been criticized at this time). We really like the top half, but the skirt is too wonky for us. The dress in the portrait, however, is a stunner.
