It’s been a treat for us to watch Miss Laurie go from befuddled to fierce on her style journey to her first Oscar nomination. She was quite clear in early interviews that she wasn’t used to the intensity of the movie awards track. She’s a Tony winner, and while there’s no lack of image campaigning among that set, it still doesn’t have the expectations of glamour and perfection; the intensity of an international audience of movie star fans that comes when your work starts getting Oscar buzz and early nominations.
What’s great about her red carpet style now, aside from the fact that it’s dramatic and photogenic without being loud or tacky, is just how much it feels like it all feels like her.

She likes plunging necklines, dramatic silhouettes, graphic prints, and rich colors. That particular set of preferences could go bad or tacky fairly easily, but this dress embodies that certain sense of restraint that seems to characterize her style. Bold but not loud; rich but not showy.
She still won’t break out a pendant when a look clearly calls for it, though. Almost feels like a bit of a blind spot.

LOVE this. Admittedly, that collar was hard to get past, but the boldness of this won us over. It definitely needed a belt, though. And we don’t think the weird neckline works as a design choice. But the colors and applique are really appealing on her – and totally unique among the awards track set. Once again, it just feels like her style rather than something curated for her. That is, ironically enough, the mark of a really good stylist.
Love the shoes.
