Greta Gerwig in Valentino at the 2018 Berlinale International Film Festival

Posted on February 16, 2018

It’s kind of ironic that Miss Greta dresses more like a movie star now that she’s a celebrated director.

This is incredibly eye-catching and dramatic. The gold, green and red play really well with her coloring. In terms of grabbing attention and taking a strong picture, you can’t beat this dress. And her hair and makeup look really pretty without trying to fight the dress for attention or impose an uncharacteristic look on her.

Much as we appreciate that the dress is lined, lining it in a nude color only turns her into this distractingly featureless body. It’s not that we want to see her legs and breasts; it’s just distracting how the dress erases them while still hovering around the illusion of nudity. Line this dress in black or a dark red and we guarantee it would be even more of a stunner.

Having said all that, the sequin embroidery on the bodice is oddly shaped and placed.
